New Delhi: Tension is increasing day by day in West Asia, and India is also raising its concerns. Last night, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke on phone with Iranian President Masoud Pejeshkian. This is believed to be the first direct conversation between the two leaders since the big US-Iran conflict started.
PM Modi said that the situation in the region has become very serious. He expressed deep concern over the increasing violence, civilian deaths and damage to civil infrastructure. He said that it is very important to reduce tension in such times, otherwise everything will get worse.
On the phone, Modi ji first mentioned the safety of Indian citizens. For the government, the lives of Indians living outside are paramount. According to reports, there are around 9 thousand Indians in Iran – students, professionals, seamen and some pilgrims too. As tension increased, many people were shifted from Tehran to safe places. Some have even come via Azerbaijan and Armenia. Modiji clearly said that their safety and return are the top priority.
Modi ji also made it clear that the supply of oil, gas and essential goods should continue without any interruption. Energy routes coming from West Asia are very important for India. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz or any disturbance can have a major impact on trade, especially our oil imports. Therefore, keeping the sea routes safe is a big concern of India.
Pejeshkian gave details to Modi ji about the current situation in his country and recent developments in the region. Both agreed that the solution to this crisis will come only through dialogue and diplomacy, there is no other way. Both leaders said that they will remain in touch.
India has been keeping an eye on the situation since the conflict started. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has spoken to Iran's Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi thrice in the last few days. In these things, the focus was on the situation in the region, safety of Indians and security of maritime trade routes. India is repeatedly saying that peace and stability in West Asia are very important, otherwise it will become difficult for everyone.
