PM Narendra Modi Receives Uzbekistan’s Highest State Honour, Gets Special Message From Tashkent

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Sunday honored with Uzbekistan's highest state honor 'Order of Oli Darajali Dostlik'. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev presented this honor to Modi in Tashkent. Uzbekistan has given this honor to Modi for his contribution in strengthening the strategic partnership between India and Uzbekistan and furthering the relations between the two countries. 

Why did Uzbekistan give this honor to Modi?

The Order of Oli Darzali Dostlik is the highest state honor of Uzbekistan. Modi has received this honor at a time when both the countries are preparing to take their relations to the next level. During the talks in Tashkent, India and Uzbekistan decided to transform their relations into a comprehensive strategic partnership.

What issues were discussed between Modi and Mirziyoyev?

Many issues including trade, investment, energy, defence and digital connectivity were discussed in the delegation-level talks between the two leaders. Prime Minister Modi said that under the new partnership, both countries will move forward with concrete goals. For this, it has also been decided to form a coordination council at the level of the foreign minister.

What was the decision regarding the supply of uranium?

Energy cooperation got special importance in the talks. Prime Minister Modi said that India and Uzbekistan will work out an arrangement for long-term supply of uranium. This step is important for India because long-term availability of fuel in the nuclear energy sector is an energy security issue. 

Will a new platform be created for trade and investment also?

It has also been agreed to organise a business summit to enhance business relations between India and Uzbekistan. Business leaders from both the countries will participate in it. Apart from this, it has been decided to raise the existing Joint Commission from Secretary level to Minister level, which will enable regular monitoring of bilateral projects and cooperation.

Will cooperation increase in defence and digital sectors?

Both countries have also kept defence and digital connectivity as important parts of the partnership. India and Uzbekistan already maintain contacts in the defence sector. Now along with trade and investment, work will also be done to increase cooperation in technology, digital sector and energy.

What did the Uzbek President say about India and Modi?

President Mirziyoyev appreciated India's economic and technological progress. He stressed the need to increase cooperation between the two countries. The closeness of the two leaders was also seen during Modi's visit. Mirziyoyev personally welcomed him upon his arrival in Tashkent on Saturday and the two leaders even traveled together in a car. 

How important is Modi's visit from the point of view of Central Asia?

After Uzbekistan, Prime Minister Modi will visit the Kyrgyz Republic, where he will participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit. In such a situation, this tour is not limited only to India-Uzbekistan relations. It is also being considered important for increasing India's activism on issues of trade, energy, security and connectivity in Central Asia.

What will happen next in India-Uzbekistan relations?

The decision on comprehensive strategic partnership opens the way for taking forward the existing cooperation between the two countries in a more systematic manner. Both sides will try to advance trade and strategic cooperation through the foreign minister-level Coordination Council, the Ministerial Joint Commission and the proposed Business Summit. The uranium supply proposal also reflects the growing importance of the energy sector in this relationship.
