National News: The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, is setting a strong example in the field of clean energy. By making clean power the foundation of the state’s growth, the government is protecting the environment while creating job opportunities for thousands of young people. In this effort, Nabha Power Limited’s (NPL) ₹641 crore electricity generation project has become a major symbol of Punjab’s green progress. This project will provide affordable and clean electricity along with 500 new jobs, building a clean and bright future for Punjab. With the launch of new energy schemes, Punjab is moving fast toward a clean power future that will make the state stronger and more developed.
Nabha Power Limited, a fully owned subsidiary of Larsen & Toubro (L&T), has begun a major plan to convert its 1,400 MW thermal power plant in Rajpura, Patiala into a hybrid model using solar energy. Under this ₹641 crore project, solar energy will be combined with the thermal plant to cut pollution by 15 percent and protect nature. Around 500 new jobs will be created, giving preference to local youth. The project will operate under a 25-year power purchase agreement with Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL), ensuring clean and affordable electricity for people in Punjab. Work on this project will begin in December 2025 and finish in phases by 2026, greatly increasing Punjab’s renewable power capacity.
The Nabha Power project will boost the state’s industrial system. The Rajpura thermal plant already supplies a large part of Punjab’s power—about 40 per cent in non-peak seasons and 20 percent during peak times. Adding solar energy will make the plant more eco-friendly. In 2025, the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) of the central government honored NPL for its efforts in environmental protection, proving its commitment to green energy. This project not only supports Punjab’s clean energy mission but also highlights the strength of Indian companies and domestic investment in sustainable projects.
The Punjab government’s other clean power projects are also moving ahead quickly. Sixty-six new solar plants will produce 264 MW of clean electricity by December 2025, generating 40 crore units every year and saving ₹176 crore in farm subsidies. This plan will bring ₹1,056 crore in investment and create over 500 jobs. The Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) has joined hands with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore to make clean hydrogen fuel from paddy straw—a big step for environmental care. A 40 MW canal-top solar project will save both water and power. Solar farms in Fazilka and Ferozepur, developed with Saferay Company, will bring more investment. Solar panels installed in 4,238 government schools are already generating 2.89 crore units of electricity. Rooftop solar systems with a total of 63.5 MW are active, and 3,000 more applications are under review. So far, PEDA has installed 815.5 MW solar plants, reducing energy losses. A ₹5,000 crore electricity infrastructure plan will end power cuts next year. All these projects have already created more than 2,000 jobs, and this number is expected to double by the end of 2025.
Clean Energy Minister Aman Arora said, “Nabha Power’s project is a major leap in Punjab’s green journey. We are moving from thermal to solar power, which will protect the environment and give youth new job opportunities.” Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann added, “This project is a sign of prosperity for every citizen of Punjab. Our government is leading the state toward new heights through clean energy, employment, and investment. Your trust in the coming elections will give us more strength. We promise to make Punjab clean, prosperous, and self-reliant.” This project will be a milestone in turning Punjab into India’s green energy engine.
