Indore Murder Case (File)
Indore Murder Case: Raja Raghuvanshi and his wife, Sonam, left Indore for a romantic honeymoon in Meghalaya’s picturesque hills. Their dream trip became a nightmare when Raja’s body was found on June 2, brutally hacked in a gorge near Weisawdong Falls. Initially believed to be a missing person case, Sonam’s disappearance sparked a 17-day manhunt. On June 9, police revealed a chilling truth: Sonam allegedly orchestrated Raja’s murder, a plot hinted at by a crucial clue overlooked early in the investigation.
On May 23, a tourist guide in Mawlakhiat reported seeing Raja and Sonam with three suspicious men, climbing over 3,000 steps from Nongriat. The guide’s tip, suggesting foul play, was shared with the Meghalaya Police but not immediately acted upon due to the case’s initial classification as a missing persons incident. This oversight delayed the investigation, allowing Sonam to evade capture. Only after Raja’s body was discovered, with evidence of a machete attack, did the police form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to pursue the lead.
The breakthrough came on June 8, when Sonam surfaced at Kashi Dhaba in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, at 1 AM, contacting her brother via video call. Alerted by the dhaba owner, police arrested her at Nandganj station. . The SIT’s analysis of CCTV footage and witness statements further corroborated the plot, tying the men seen on May 23 to the crime.
The ignored clue has sparked criticism of the initial investigation’s pace. As Sonam awaits transfer to Meghalaya for trial, the case underscores the importance of swift action on early leads, revealing a tragic tale of betrayal that has gripped the nation.
