New Delhi: The rape and murder case of a trainee doctor in the Kolkata hospital that shook the nation finally got justice. The Kolkata court sentenced the convict to life imprisonment. The additional district judge heard the convict's statement around afternoon before pronouncing the quantum of punishment.
During the sentencing, the lawyer of the convict said, Even if it is a rarest of rare case, there should be scope for reformation. The court has to show why the convict is not worth reformation or rehabilitation... The public prosecutor has to present evidence and give reasons why the person is not worth reformation and should be completely eliminated from society.
What happened in the court?
The family lawyer of the victim demanded death punishment for the accused. He said, 'I want death sentence as maximum punishment.
The accused Sanjay Roy was found guilty of raping and murdering a 31 year trainee doctor in the Kolkata hosppital under section 64, 66 and 103 of the Bhartiya Nayaya Sanhita.
Meanwhile West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said she will not comment on the case until the court announces the verdict. The parents of the victim said they have full faith in the Indian Judicial System.
The victim's mother present in the court expressed disappointment and said other culprits involved in the crime have not brought to justice'. She added Only one person is not involved in the crime, yet the CBI has failed to apprehend the others. Such criminals have no right to live if we are to prevent future crimes in society'.

Police found the body of the trainee doctor on 9th August in the seminar room of the hospital. The incident triggered wide spread protests across the nation and the case was later handed over to CBI.
