The recent arrest of 30-year-old Rahul Karamveer Jat, accused of the rape and murder of a 19-year-old college student in Gujarat, has uncovered chilling details about his criminal history. Gujarat Police revealed that the suspect is a serial killer linked to at least four other murders in various states within just a month.

A coordinated effort by the police forces of six states led to Jat’s arrest on November 24 at Vapi Railway Station in Gujarat. According to Karanraj Vaghela, Superintendent of Police (SP) of Valsad, Jat, a resident of Haryana, was apprehended while traveling on the Bandra-Bhuj train.

Investigations began on November 14 after the body of a 19-year-old girl was discovered near Udwada Railway Station in Valsad district. The forensic report confirmed rape and murder. The police scanned over 2,000 CCTV footages and identified Jat as a suspect based on his distinct limp and clothing that matched items found at the crime scene.

A trail of crimes across states

Rahul Jat’s criminal history spans multiple states, including Karnataka, West Bengal, and Andhra Pradesh. In October 2024, he allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered a woman on the Pune-Kanyakumari train near Solapur. In November, he reportedly killed a fellow passenger in the Bengaluru-Murdeshwar train over a cigarette dispute and stabbed a 63-year-old man to death on the Katihar Express in West Bengal. Days before his arrest, Jat was accused of murdering a woman aboard the Mangaluru Special Express at Secunderabad Railway Station.

Disturbing modus operandi

Police revealed that Jat primarily targeted lone passengers in women's and disabled train compartments. His crimes were often opportunistic, preying on isolated victims. CCTV footage even captured him casually eating at a railway station shortly after committing one of his heinous acts.

Who is Rahul Karamveer Jat?

Originally from Rohtak, Haryana, Jat dropped out of school in fifth grade. Despite his physical disability, he reportedly exploited it to travel unnoticed on trains. He has confessed to several crimes during interrogation, further implicating himself in a series of horrifying acts.
