Kolkata: Trinamool Congress has suffered another major setback in West Bengal. Senior party leader and former Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Shantanu Sen resigned from the post of national spokesperson. This resignation is considered important amid the ongoing internal tussle in the party after the election defeat.
In a letter sent to Mamata Banerjee, Dr. Sen said that she defended the party from public forums on many difficult occasions. But in the current situation this is no longer possible for them. He says that after many controversies and allegations of corruption, the people of Bengal have rejected the party.
Shantanu Sen mentioned the RG Tax Medical College controversy, Abhaya case and cash-for-jobs scam. According to him, after these cases, presenting the party's side on TV and in debates was not acceptable to his conscience.
TMC is under pressure after its weak performance in the assembly elections. The resentment of many leaders has now started coming out openly. There is a demand for change in the organisation, but no concrete steps are visible from the leadership. Political experts believe that Shantanu Sen's departure is another link to the discontent growing within the party.
Shantanu Sen is not alone. In the last few weeks, there have been reports of many more leaders being dissatisfied. Questions are being raised within the party regarding the organisational reshuffle and review of the defeat. From grassroots workers to some senior leaders, there is resentment regarding the decisions. In such a situation, it is becoming difficult for Mamata Banerjee to keep the party united.
Dr. Shantanu Sen has been the face of TMC for a long time. From TV debates to press conferences, he consistently stood for the party. His resignation is not just leaving a post. This is a direct message to the leadership that dissatisfaction has now reached the most vocal faces of the party. If damage control is not done soon, TMC may have to suffer further losses in the coming days.
