Girija Vyas
National News: Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Dr. Girija Vyas died on 1 May 2025 in Udaipur, Rajasthan. On March 31, during Gangaur Puja, her dupatta caught fire from the flame of a lamp, due to which she suffered severe burns. She was immediately admitted to a private hospital in Udaipur and later referred to Zydus Hospital in Ahmedabad, where she was undergoing treatment. Her condition was said to be critical and she died.
Dr. Girija Vyas was born on 8 July 1946 in Nathdwara, Rajasthan. She studied at Mohanlal Sukhadia University, Udaipur and University of Delaware. She was the author of eight books, three of which are collections of poems. Her political career began in 1985 from the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly and she was elected to the Lok Sabha from Udaipur in 1991.
In the Narasimha Rao government, she served as Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. She was also the Chairperson of the National Commission for Women and also served as the President of the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee. In 2013, she served as Minister in the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation.
The Congress party and other leaders have condoled her death. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot paid tribute to her and said that her death is an irreparable loss. Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal described her as a supporter of women's rights and a versatile poet. Assam Congress called her a 'supporter of women's rights and a voice of intelligence'.
