Sonam Wangchuk arrested under NSA. (X)
Jammu and Kashmir:Sonam Wangchuk, a prominent Ladakh climate activist and academic, was transferred to Jodhpur, Rajasthan, just hours after being arrested under the National Security Act (NSA). According to officials, a police team led by Ladakh Director General of Police SD Singh detained Wangchuk from his home and later sent him to Jodhpur jail.
Sources say there were already speculations that Wangchuk could be taken out of Ladakh. The NSA is a law that allows a person to be detained for a long time without bail. Internet services were suspended in Leh immediately after his arrest. Section 144 remained in force in the city for the third day, although no untoward incident was reported.
The police have registered an FIR against Sonam Wangchuk for inciting violence. Prior to the arrest, he warned the central government that the situation could worsen if he was detained. Apart from this, he has also been accused of violating foreign funding rules.
On the basis of these allegations, the Union Home Ministry has also canceled the FCRA license of his organization Students Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL). Due to this, the organization has been deprived of the right to take donations from abroad.
