Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court granted significant relief to Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee on Sunday. The court stayed the demolition of an office—located in Amtala, South 24 Parganas district, within the Diamond Harbour parliamentary constituency—for the time being.
During a special hearing on Sunday, Justice Raja Basu Chowdhury directed the state government to submit all documents related to the Amtala building to the court. The building is allegedly owned by the company 'Leaps and Bounds'. In a separate case, the Enforcement Directorate has claimed that Abhishek Banerjee is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of this company.
The court ordered that the status quo be maintained regarding the building on Diamond Harbour Road until the end of July and that no demolition work be carried out in the interim. The next hearing on the matter will take place before the regular bench. 'Leaps and Bounds', the company that owns the building, has challenged the demolition proceedings by filing a petition in the High Court. The South 24 Parganas district administration had initiated the demolition of the building on Saturday. The administration alleges that the building was constructed without an approved plan and in violation of regulations.
On Sunday, Abhishek Banerjee alleged that under the BJP government in West Bengal, the police have become violators of the law. He stated that the administration carried out this action in collusion with the ruling BJP. In a post on 'X', Diamond Harbour MP Banerjee said that his office in Amtala—located within his constituency—was demolished, even though the Supreme Court and High Courts have declared bulldozer-led demolition actions unconstitutional.
Abhishek Banerjee, nephew of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, said, "Law and order in Bengal appears to be in tatters. In the video, West Bengal Police personnel are seen alongside BJP goons, carrying away laptops, printers, documents, tables, chairs, and boxes filled with other items." He wrote on X that this was not a demolition but a theft committed in uniform, carried out with complete disregard for the rule of law. All this took place while the matter is still sub judice in the High Court. He stated, "Those responsible for upholding the law have themselves become lawbreakers. Shame on the West Bengal Police."
