Chennai: The political confusion that had been going on for the last five days in Tamil Nadu finally ended on Saturday. DMK's allies VCK and IUML announced their unconditional support for TVK. After this, TVK chief Joseph Vijay met Governor Vishwanath Arlekar for the fourth time with the letter of support from 121 MLAs. After getting a strong majority claim, the governor appointed Vijay as the new chief minister of Tamil Nadu.
Joseph Vijay will take oath as Chief Minister at 10 am on Sunday at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai. Many big leaders are likely to attend the function. There is talk of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also attending the programme. The governor has directed Vijay to prove his majority in the assembly by May 13.
No party had a clear majority in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly. TVK emerged as the largest party by winning 108 seats, but it needed the support of 118 MLAs to form the government. In such a situation, there was continuous manipulation and meetings in the politics of the state.
Amidst the government formation exercise, Congress first decided to support TVK. Five Congress MLAs came with Vijay. After this, CPI and CPI(M) also supported their two MLAs. However, despite this, TVK was a few seats behind the majority figure.
After maintaining silence for several days, Thirumavalavan's party VCK announced its support to TVK on Saturday. The party said it is taking this decision to prevent the possibility of President's rule in Tamil Nadu and to respect the people's mandate. Soon after VCK's support, IUML also announced its support for TVK. Both the parties have two MLAs each and with this TVK reached the majority mark.
VCK and IUML made it clear that they will remain part of the DMK-led alliance. They have supported TVK only for government formation. After this statement, new discussions have started in political circles.
Vijay's father and film producer SA Chandrashekhar expressed happiness over his son becoming the chief minister. He said that through victory the Tamil people have got new hope and success. He also appealed to Vijay to work with full honesty for the public.
There was also resentment among TVK workers due to the delay in government formation. A worker in Tirunelveli district attempted self-immolation, following which he was admitted to hospital in a critical condition.
NDA ally AMMK accused TVK of horse-trading. Party chief TTV Dhinakaran claimed that “fake” support letter of his party MLA S Kamaraj was used. However, TVK completely rejected these allegations.
Amidst these political developments, the X handle of VCK also came into discussion. The account was suspended on Friday citing “violations of X rules”. It was told that this action took place after a post was made in support of TVK.
