Politics intensifies over stampede in Karur, Tamil Nadu (X)
Tamil Nadu Stempede Updates: Forty-one people died in a stampede at a Karur rally organized by actor-turned-politician Vijay's party, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. After the incident, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said that a one-member Judicial Commission has been constituted under the chairmanship of former Judge Aruna Jagdishan to investigate the incident. He assured that the government will take further action based on the report of the Commission.
Describing the incident as unprecedented, the Chief Minister said that the state government has given a relief amount of Rs 10 lakh to the families of the deceased, while medical assistance is being provided to the injured. He also said that the government will soon prepare new rules and guidelines for political rallies and major events.
Stalin appealed to the public and political parties to avoid spreading rumors and misinformation on social media. He said, "Regardless of any party, the victims are part of our Tamil family."
Meanwhile, the TVK has demanded a CBI investigation into the tragedy and accused the ruling DMK of conspiracy. The party's lawyer, Arivzhagan, filed a petition in the Madras High Court, requesting that the investigation be transferred from the Karur Town Police to the CBI. The petition will be heard on Friday.
Meanwhile, TVK leader Adhav Arjun has also filed a petition in the court, urging the state government to ensure that Vijay is not prevented from meeting the families of the victims. Meanwhile, Chennai police received a false report of a bomb at Vijay's residence, prompting police and the bomb squad to conduct a search and tighten security.
Officials reported serious lapses in crowd control at Saturday's rally. People were made to wait for more than seven hours, there was a shortage of water and food, and the road show was conducted without adequate permission.
