New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has raised questions regarding the murder of Congress worker Debdeep Chatterjee in Asansol, West Bengal. He has launched a scathing attack on the state's Mamata Banerjee-led government. Accusing Trinamool Congress workers of Debdeep's murder, the Congress MP asserted that what prevails in West Bengal today is not democracy, but the "goon rule" of the TMC. Furthermore, Rahul Gandhi has demanded that the state government provide full security and compensation to the family of the slain Congress worker.
On Sunday, Rahul Gandhi wrote on the social media platform 'X': "The post-election murder of Congress worker Debdeep Chatterjee—perpetrated by goons linked to the TMC—is highly condemnable. What prevails in West Bengal today is not democracy, but the goon rule of the TMC. Intimidating, killing, and eliminating dissenting voices after the vote has become the very character of the TMC. Congress politics has never been, nor will it ever be, founded on violence. We, too, have lost our workers; yet, we have always chosen the path of non-violence and the Constitution. This is our legacy; this is our resolve."
Additionally, Rahul Gandhi demanded that the family of the deceased Congress worker be provided with full security as well as compensation. In his post, he wrote: "My demand is clear—all culprits must be arrested immediately, they must receive the harshest possible punishment, and full security and compensation must be ensured for Debdeep's family." In his 'X' post, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi also affirmed that the Congress will not bow down before this brand of politics, which tarnishes India's non-violent traditions.
Earlier, the West Bengal unit of the Congress alleged that Debdeep was attacked and brutally beaten by miscreants linked to the ruling Trinamool Congress party. Shortly thereafter, he succumbed to his injuries. According to the state unit of the Congress, Debdeep Chatterjee was known to work closely with Prasenjit Puitandi, the Congress candidate from Asansol North.
The Congress party stated that this tragic incident highlights the law-and-order situation in the state, which has completely collapsed. It raises serious questions regarding the safety of opposition workers in West Bengal. The fact that such violence occurred immediately after the voting concludes points to a deeply disturbing pattern of political intimidation and vendetta.
