UNLF Militant group shoots man after rape confession (X)
Manipur: The Koireng faction of the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) resorted to vigilantism and shot dead a 30-year-old man after they investigated on whether he was involved in the rape of a 28-year-old woman at Imphal. The act of revenge has left many in controversy over the group that says it is waging a war against crimes against women.
On January 10, a sexual assault case caused mass outrage in the nation. A 28-year-old woman who was alone in Hotel Imphal was attacked by the man named Khaidem Nongdam Khanganba. The woman had come back from Delhi and was staying alone in the hotel. Khanganba had gone to the hotel to celebrate a birthday and was accused of posing as hotel staff to enter her room and then assaulting her as he tried to give her alcohol.
Following the attack, a special team of the Koireng-faction of the UNLF was sent for an investigation of the incident. The group claimed to have investigated the entire episode and thereby proved Khanganba as the culprit behind it. The group further claimed that Khanganba confessed to the attack, which also brought punishment upon him. UNLF decided to shoot him at leg in return although the group declared it was not such a severe retribution as they had intended for him.
UNLF threatens to wage wars against crimes against women and children and solicits public support. The acts of the outlawed group have also raised the issue of vigilante justice. Khangabba after being shot in the chest has been admitted at Shija hospital for surgery, police confirmed while keeping mum on the details of the rape case.
This makes the UNLF, under RK Achou Singh alias Koireng, stand against a peace talk with the government for quite a long time than the faction of the leadership from Khundongbam Pambei, who agreed to a peace accord with the government in November 2023. It reflects the political strain still existing within the region.
