National News: The National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) Vice Presidential candidate, CP Radhakrishnan, received a warm felicitation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior BJP leaders, and allies of the ruling coalition during a meeting of NDA MPs in New Delhi on Tuesday. The 67-year-old leader, who currently serves as the Governor of Maharashtra, is expected to file his nomination papers on Wednesday.

With the BJP-led NDA enjoying a comfortable majority in the electoral college, which comprises members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, Radhakrishnan’s victory is being seen as a near certainty. The numbers are heavily stacked in favor of the NDA, leaving little room for an upset. However, the opposition INDIA bloc has indicated its intention to field a joint candidate to put up a symbolic contest, ensuring that the election will not go uncontested.

PM Modi’s call for unanimity

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, briefing the media after the meeting, said that Prime Minister Modi had appealed to all political parties, including opposition groups, to support Radhakrishnan’s candidature unanimously. The Prime Minister, he said, underlined that Radhakrishnan’s long career in public life, his administrative experience, and his reputation as a people’s leader make him an ideal candidate to hold the constitutional office of Vice President.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the post of Vice President, who also serves as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, requires a leader capable of building consensus, respecting all viewpoints, and upholding parliamentary traditions. By fielding Radhakrishnan, the NDA hopes to project a candidate acceptable across the political spectrum.

Radhakrishnan’s political journey

A veteran leader from Tamil Nadu, CP Radhakrishnan has been associated with the BJP since its early days and has played a crucial role in strengthening the party’s base in southern India. Over the decades, he has served the party in various capacities and earned a reputation for his accessibility and grounded approach. In 2021, he was appointed as the Governor of Jharkhand and later took charge as the Governor of Maharashtra, where his tenure has been marked by efforts to maintain smooth coordination between the state government and the Centre.

PM Modi’s personal message

Prime Minister Modi also met Radhakrishnan personally on Monday. In a post on Instagram, he shared his admiration for the NDA’s nominee, writing, “Met Thiru CP Radhakrishnan ji. PM Modi Congratulates CP Radhakrishnan on NDA’s Vice Presidential Nomination. His long public service and experience in various fields will enrich our nation. May he continue to serve the nation with the same dedication and determination that he has always shown.”

The road ahead

With nomination filing set for Wednesday and voting scheduled in the coming days, political observers believe the Vice Presidential election is more of a formality given the NDA’s numerical edge. For Radhakrishnan, however, the moment marks a new milestone in a decades-long career dedicated to public service. If elected, he will succeed Jagdeep Dhankhar in presiding over the Rajya Sabha and will have the responsibility of ensuring smooth conduct of the Upper House, particularly at a time when parliamentary sessions often witness heated confrontations between treasury benches and the opposition.
