Vice Presidential election
National News: Voting for the Vice Presidential election will take place on Tuesday from 10 am to 5 pm. Members of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha form the electoral college. Counting will begin the same evening at 6 pm. The NDA enjoys a clear majority in Parliament, giving it a comfortable edge. With 293 members in Lok Sabha and 129 in Rajya Sabha, the ruling alliance crosses the majority mark of 394 with 422 votes in hand.
The election became necessary after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the Vice President’s post on July 21, citing health reasons. He had been serving since 2022 and earlier worked as West Bengal’s governor from 2019 to 2022 before moving to Delhi.
NDA’s choice, CP Radhakrishnan, is a 68-year-old leader from Tamil Nadu. Known as a soft-spoken and non-controversial figure, he has been elected to Lok Sabha twice. Since July 2024, he has been serving as Maharashtra’s governor, backed strongly by the BJP.
The INDIA bloc candidate, Sudershan Reddy, is a 79-year-old retired Supreme Court judge. He is remembered for landmark rulings on black money investigations and for declaring Salwa Judum unconstitutional. His clean image and southern roots add weight to his candidacy.
Although the numbers are in NDA’s favor, the battle is significant. It reflects the opposition’s effort to challenge the ruling party’s dominance by fielding a strong, credible face. The results will show whether it’s a smooth win or a surprise.
