Picnic at Perwaghagh Waterfall in Khunti, Jharkhand, turned deadly for a group of 26 junior doctors from Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences Ranchi. One intern aged 24, drowned, while three others narrowly escaped after being swept into deep waters. The incident has cast a pall of grief over the medical community and raised urgent questions about safety at popular tourist spots.

The Fatal Outing
The group, comprising 2019 batch students and juniors, arrived at Perwaghagh, 40 km from Ranchi, for a day of relaxation. While bathing in the waterfall’s inviting but treacherous waters, four doctors were caught in a strong current. Khalkho, a Khunti native pursuing his MBBS internship, was pulled into a deep pool and could not be saved despite rescue efforts. The three others, rescued in critical condition, were rushed to a Ranchi hospital for treatment.

Rescue and Response
Local villagers and fellow doctors raised an alarm, prompting a swift response from Khunti police and emergency teams. The rescued doctors received first aid before transfer to RIMS, where they are stable but traumatized. Khalkho’s body was recovered after a grueling effort, and a post-mortem confirmed drowning as the cause of death. Jharkhand Minister expressed condolences, reflecting the statewide shock.

Safety Concerns Highlighted
Perwaghagh, a scenic spot on the Banai River, lacks safety measures like warning signs, lifeguards, or barriers, despite attracting crowds for picnics. Recent incidents, including the drowning of two brothers at nearby Remix Falls in March 2025, underscore the region’s risks. Locals and activists are now demanding regulated access and safety infrastructure to prevent further tragedies.

A Community in Mourning
RIMS canceled classes, and a somber mood enveloped the campus as students and faculty mourned Khalkho, remembered for his dedication. The incident has sparked calls for stricter picnic guidelines for students. As investigations continue, Perwaghagh’s allure remains tainted, urging authorities to prioritize safety to protect lives at Jharkhand’s picturesque but perilous waterfalls.
