Kolkata: In a shocking incident, the body of a second-year medical student from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was discovered hanging in her quarters, a police officer confirmed on Monday.
The deceased, identified as Ivy Prasad, was residing in the staff quarters of Kamarhati ESI Hospital, where her mother serves as a doctor. Authorities have registered a case of unnatural death at the Kamarhati police station under the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate, and a thorough investigation is currently in progress.
According to officials, Ivy Prasad was found dead on Thursday after failing to respond to repeated phone calls from her mother. Concerned about her daughter's safety, the mother alerted authorities, leading to the tragic discovery. The body was subsequently sent for a post-mortem examination at the state-run Sagar Dutta Medical College and Hospital the following day.
Police are actively probing the circumstances surrounding the student's death. While initial findings suggest suicide, investigators are exploring all possible angles to determine if any external factors contributed to the incident.
This incident comes in the wake of a previous tragedy at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where a postgraduate trainee was raped and murdered on August 9 last year. The case sparked widespread protests and demands for stricter security measures in medical institutions.
The recent death has reignited concerns about student safety, with many calling for enhanced support systems and mental health resources for medical students. Authorities are expected to provide further updates as the investigation unfolds.
