Islamabad: The ongoing protests in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) are becoming increasingly fierce. Jammu and Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) has alleged that the bodies of those killed during the recent protests are not being handed over to their families. The organisation claims that this is being done to hide the actual number of dead.
According to JAAC, more than 53 people have died so far during the movement, while hundreds have been injured. However, these figures have not been officially confirmed by the Government of Pakistan.
According to local media reports, the shutdown continued in PoJK for the third consecutive day. Markets are closed, public activities have come to a standstill and internet and mobile services have also been suspended in many areas. Resentment among the people is increasing amid heavy deployment of security forces.
Rawalakot remains the main centre of the movement. The situation became more tense here last week after the death of a businessman in a clash between security personnel and protesters. After this thousands of people came out on the streets.
JAAC representative Imtiaz Aslam said that the agitation will continue until the bodies of the deceased are handed over to their families and the ban imposed on the organization is withdrawn.
The protesters are demanding an independent investigation into civilian deaths, withdrawal of security forces from cities and restoration of civil rights. Despite internet restrictions, a large number of people are joining the protests.
Human rights organisation Amnesty International has also criticised the action being taken against protesters in PoJK. The organisation alleges that the Pakistan administration is using excessive force and trying to suppress the voice of dissent.
Amnesty said basic human rights should be respected in the region and the protection of civilians should be ensured.
Senior British Conservative MP Bob Blackman has also expressed concern over the situation in PoJK. He criticised Pakistan's action and said that its occupation of this area is illegal and it should withdraw from there.
Blackman claimed that some British citizens have also been affected by the recent violence. He has demanded the British government take this issue seriously and seek answers from Pakistan.
