The 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is on the verge of making his highly anticipated international debut during the ongoing T20I series against England.

Manchester: At 15 years, 3 months, and 7 days old, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has become the youngest player to make an international debut for India. The opening batter from Samastipur, Bihar, was named in the playing XI for India’s second T20I against England in Manchester on Saturday, July 4.

What was the path to the debut?

Sooryavanshi first drew widespread attention with his aggressive batting in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He received his maiden international cap from teammate Tilak Varma. The selection follows a brief period on the bench, where he went through unused during the two-match T20I series in Ireland. Also, the first T20I against England in Durham. His call-up to the senior national side came after a dominant performance for India A during the June tri-series in Dambulla. In the tournament final against Sri Lanka A, Sooryavanshi hit an 11-ball half-century, the fastest recorded in List A cricket, before eventually being dismissed for 94 off 29 deliveries.

How is this a record-breaking entry?

He first appeared against England, and broke the record for the youngest Indian debutant across all formats. He surpassed female batter Shafali Verma. She was also debuted in 2019 at 15 years and 239 days. In men's cricket, he overtook Sachin Tendulkar's 36-year-old record as India's youngest international cricketer. Tendulkar made his Test debut at 16 years and 205 days.

While the Indian selectors have previously fast-tracked teenagers into the national setup. Sooryavanshi is now one of them and the first to debut at 15.
