Bangladesh Sports Advisor Changes Tune on T20 World Cup Boycott, Points to Players and BCB (X)
New Delhi: Bangladesh's decision to withdraw from the ICC T20 World Cup has now taken a new turn. Bangladesh's interim sports advisor Asif Nazrul has now made a different claim on the decision which was being said to have been taken by the government till a few weeks ago. He has said that the decision of not playing the World Cup was taken jointly by the Bangladesh Cricket Board and the players so that the dignity of the country and the safety of cricket could be given priority. This changed stance has brought the entire matter under discussion again.
In January, when Bangladesh had announced its withdrawal from the T20 World Cup, Asif Nazrul had clearly said that whether the team plays or not is entirely the decision of the government. At that time, security reasons and the alleged unfavorable environment in India were cited. Now Nazrul says that this decision was taken jointly by BCB and the players, due to which questions have been raised on the statements given earlier.
This whole matter started when fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman was released from his team by Kolkata Knight Riders after political pressure. After this incident, resentment increased in Dhaka and BCB demanded from ICC that Bangladesh's group matches should be held in co-host Sri Lanka instead of India.
ICC refused to change the schedule. After this, Bangladesh Cricket Board took the official decision to withdraw from the World Cup and Scotland was included in the tournament in place of the team. This decision intensified the stir in international cricket.
In a recent statement, Nazrul said that he has no regrets about this decision. According to him, the players and the board took this step keeping in mind the prestige of the country. He also said that this sacrifice was made to secure the future of Bangladeshi cricket.
Due to Bangladesh's withdrawal, clouds of crisis started looming over the tournament. The situation became more serious when Pakistan also indicated it would boycott its match against India. This increased pressure on the ICC to handle the situation.
Several rounds of talks were held in Lahore to reduce tension. Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Mohsin Naqvi said that during the talks, Pakistan gave priority to the issue of Bangladesh over its own interests. After these meetings the situation gradually returned to normal.
The ICC adopted a lenient stance, avoiding punitive action. The board made it clear that no financial penalty or sporting ban will be imposed on BCB. Bangladesh was also assured of being given priority in hosting ICC events between 2028 and 2031.
The ICC also clarified that BCB will get its full revenue share so that there is no impact on the domestic cricket structure. This decision is being seen as a big relief for Bangladesh cricket.
Although Bangladeshi fans will not get a chance to watch their team play in the World Cup, the board has come out of this crisis without any restrictions. Despite this, the changed statements regarding the decision have certainly left the question as to at what stage the actual decision to withdraw from the World Cup was taken.
