New Delhi: India's historic performance at the recently concluded fifth Asian Para Games has renewed calls for greater recognition of the coaches who played a key role in the country's medal-winning campaign. While Indian athletes secured an impressive 114 medals, para-athletics alone accounted for 65, making it the largest contributor to the overall tally.

Amid discussions about a proposed meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demands are growing for adequate representation of para-athletics coaches alongside the athletes. With the number of participants expected to be limited, concerns have been raised over whether the trainers behind the medal-winning performances will receive due recognition.

Why Should Para-Athletics Coaches Get Greater Representation?

A successful sporting career involves much more than an athlete's natural ability. Years of disciplined training, technical guidance, strategic planning and continuous support from coaches play an essential role in achieving international success.

Many coaches dedicate significant time and effort to helping athletes prepare for major competitions, often working behind the scenes without receiving the same public recognition as the medal winners.

Given para-athletics' contribution of 65 medals to India's overall tally of 114, supporters believe its coaches should receive meaningful representation during the proposed interaction with the Prime Minister.

Recognition Could Boost Preparations for Future Events

The demand for greater representation is also linked to the country's preparations for upcoming international competitions, including world championships and the Paralympic Games.

Recognising coaches alongside athletes, supporters say, would acknowledge their contribution, strengthen morale and encourage continued efforts towards future sporting achievements.
