Thiruvananthapuram: Star all-rounder Deepti Sharma became the highest wicket taker in WT20I history as India women defeated their Sri Lanka counterparts by 15 runs in the fifth and final T20I here on Tuesday.
This the first time that the India women have swept a bilateral T20I series of this length at home.
Chasing 176, Sri Lanka produced their best batting performance of the series but could only manage to reach 160/7 in their 20 overs. Deepti returned figures of 1/28 in her four overs to surpass the tally of Australia’s Megan Schutt and become the highest wicket taker in WT20I history with 152 scalps to her name.
She had equalled Schutt’s tally of 151 in the third match of the series and had a chance to break the record in the fourth T20I but had gone wicketless and had to wait for the final contest of the series.
Earlier, India rode a superb knock of 68 off 43 deliveries by Harmanpreet Kaur to post a challenging total of 175/7.
The skipper’s knock came as a big boost for the hosts as the rest of their batters struggled to get going on a difficult pitch.
The visitors’ reply was built around an excellent 79-run stand for the second wicket off just 56 deliveries by Hasini Perera and Imesha Dulani.
Playing her 81st T20I, Perera finally brought up her maiden half-century in the format, while Dulani also reached the milestone to ensure that Sri Lanka will stay within touching distance of the target till the very end.
Needing 34 runs to win with two overs left to go, the Sri Lanka tailenders kept the home crowd at the edge of their seats till the end, but it was ultimately not enough to upstage the hosts on the night.
