Gulveer Singh Creates History With 5000m Bronze, Achieves Rare Commonwealth Games Feat (X)

Glasgow: India's long distance runner Gulveer Singh made history on Saturday in the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2026 as he bagged a bronze medal in the men’s 5000m race here, which makes him the first Indian to clinch a medal in the said category.

What about other achievement?

Earlier, Gulveer secured the silver medal in the 10,000m race in the same competition, making him the first Indian athlete who won medals in the 5000 and 10,000m categories of the same CWG. Gulvir Singh ran an amazing race and secured the bronze medal in the 5000m after edging out Kenya’s Cornelius Kemboi by just 0.04 seconds in a thrilling contest.

What about the time?

With a time of 13 minutes 24.95 seconds, Gulveer ran the race in the 5000m final event held in Glasgow on Saturday. Australia's Kai Robinson claimed silver in 13 minutes 24.70 seconds, whereas Kenya's Matthew Kipsang bagged gold in 13 minutes 23.61 seconds.

Gulveer has been consistently doing well from last few years, taking home the bronze medal in 5000m from the Asian Athletic Championships in 2023 as well. He went further on with grabbing a medal for the 10,000m in the same year in the Asian Games.

What about other records?

The most memorable year of his career was 2025, where he won gold medals for 5000 & 10,000 meters races at the Asian Athletics Championships held in Gumi, South Korea. 

During this period, he broke down several records with being the first Indian to run mile (race) in under four minutes i.e., 3 minutes and55.63 seconds. Also completing the Half Marathon race within an hour. Hence, he became the very first Indian to complete the half marathon runs under an hour.
