New Delhi: South African fast bowler Lungi Ngidi was rushed to a local hospital by ambulance after sustaining a severe injury during the IPL match between the Delhi Capitals and the Punjab Kings on Saturday at Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium. The arrival of an ambulance on the field made the situation appear quite grave and concerning. However, the latest updates indicate that his condition is gradually stabilizing, and he is expected to be discharged soon.

How did Lungi Ngidi get injured?

During the third over of the Punjab Kings' innings—as they chased a target of 265 runs for victory—Ngidi, stationed at mid-off, ran backward to attempt a catch off a shot played by Priyansh Arya against Captain Axar Patel's bowling. However, he misjudged the trajectory of the ball, lost his balance, and fell to the ground. In the process, his shoulder and head struck the ground forcefully. Immediately upon falling, Ngidi clutched his head and remained motionless on the turf for a brief period. He lay on the field for several minutes before the team physiotherapist and doctor rushed to the scene. During the initial assessment, a neck brace was applied to stabilize his neck. He was then immediately transported to Max Hospital on Pusa Road, Delhi, for medical evaluation.

What did IPL say about Lungi Ngidi's Condition?

The IPL confirmed that the 30-year-old right-arm fast bowler had complained of a headache and neck pain, but noted that his condition is currently stable. In a statement posted on 'X' (formerly Twitter), the IPL said: "Delhi Capitals' Lungi Ngidi hit his head on the ground while attempting to take a catch during his team's match against the Punjab Kings. Following complaints of a headache and neck pain, he was taken to the hospital by ambulance." The statement added: "Ngidi's condition is stable, and he is expected to be discharged from the hospital shortly. Vipraj Nigam has entered the field as a 'Concussion Substitute'."

During this incident, the Capitals' players appeared visibly concerned, and a hushed silence fell over the stadium. Ngidi was seen responding to questions from the medical team. Meanwhile, other South African players—Tristan Stubbs and David Miller—as well as Punjab Kings Head Coach Ricky Ponting and Delhi Capitals Head Coach Hemang Badani, also arrived at the scene to inquire about his well-being.

As for the match itself, following Ngidi's departure, the Delhi Capitals were unable to defend their total of 265 runs, and the Punjab Kings made history by winning the contest by 6 wickets. The Punjab Kings team successfully completed the highest-ever run chase in the history of the IPL.
