New Delhi: The 35th match of IPL 2026 was played on Saturday between the Delhi Capitals and the Punjab Kings. In this encounter, the Punjab Kings made history by executing the highest successful run chase—not just in the IPL, but in the entire history of T20 cricket. Batting first, Delhi posted a total of 264 runs, powered by a century from KL Rahul. However, Punjab successfully chased down this target with one over and one ball to spare. The match took place at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, where the Delhi team had elected to bat first after winning the toss. Driven by KL Rahul's blistering innings of 152 runs, Delhi had set a formidable total of 264; yet, Punjab managed to chase it down.

Did Punjab Achieve a Historic Run Chase?

Responding to the target of 265 runs, Punjab got off to a spectacular start. Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh engaged in aggressive, explosive batting. By the 7th over, when Priyansh lost his wicket, Punjab's score stood at 126 runs. Priyansh contributed 43 runs off just 17 balls. Meanwhile, at the other end, Prabhsimran's onslaught continued unabated. Subsequently, in the 8th over, Prabhsimran Singh was dismissed. Prabhsimran scored 76 runs off 26 balls; his innings featured 9 fours and 5 sixes.

Following this, a solid partnership of 56 runs developed between Nehal Wadhera and Shreyas Iyer. However, Nehal lost his wicket in the 15th over, having scored 25 runs off 15 balls. Shreyas Iyer then took charge of the innings, playing an unbeaten knock of 71 runs off 36 balls. During his innings, Iyer struck 7 sixes and 3 fours. Powered by this performance, Punjab clinched the victory with 7 balls to spare. Punjab remains undefeated in the tournament and currently sits at the top of the points table.

When it comes to the most successful run chase in T20 cricket history, that record now belongs to Punjab. Prior to this match, Punjab Kings had successfully chased down a total of 262 runs in 2024. Meanwhile, South Africa had chased 259 runs in 2023. With this victory, the Punjab team has now accumulated 13 points from 7 matches. Conversely, the Delhi team sits at the sixth spot on the points table with 3 wins from 7 matches.

How Did KL Rahul Perform?

Batting first, KL Rahul and Pathum Nissanka opened the innings for Delhi. However, Nissanka failed to make an impact in this match as well, getting dismissed after scoring just 11 runs. Following his departure, however, KL Rahul and Nitish Rana unleashed a blistering batting display. The duo rained down sixes and fours. In the 15th over, KL Rahul reached his century off just 47 balls.

Nitish Rana and KL Rahul shared a massive 220-run partnership off 95 balls. Rana scored 91 runs off 44 deliveries; his innings featured 11 fours and 4 sixes. Meanwhile, KL Rahul remained anchored at one end, playing an unbeaten knock of 152 runs off 67 balls. Powered by this performance, Delhi posted a total of 264 runs for the loss of 2 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. During his innings, KL Rahul smashed 16 fours and 9 sixes.
