New Delhi: The Under-19 World Cup has now reached a point where not a single mistake will be forgiven. Just one match, and a direct ticket to the final. The second semi-final will be played between India and Afghanistan Under-19 teams on Wednesday, 4 February, at Harare Sports Club. Both the teams have shown amazing performance so far, but now the real pressure has started. One mistake and return home.
Indian team is running almost perfectly. Defeated America easily, won against Bangladesh in difficult conditions, also clean-swept New Zealand. Then, by defeating Zimbabwe and Pakistan in the Super Six, they made it clear that they have not just come to play; they have come to lift the trophy. The confidence that is visible in the boys is their biggest strength.
If any team can quietly pull off a major upset, it is Afghanistan. They have defeated teams like South Africa and West Indies. After losing to Sri Lanka, they beat Ireland by 191 runs - meaning they know how to fight even under pressure. It would be a big mistake to take them lightly. The Afghanistan players play with passion, and that passion can be dangerous in the semi-finals.
For India, Abhigyan Kundu is continuously scoring runs and supports the team in difficult times. Henil Patel's pace bowling is amazing, he is also taking wickets. In Afghanistan, Faisal Shinwarizada has been making waves with the bat, and Nuristani Omerzai can provide early shocks with the new ball. Meaning there are strong players from both sides, the competition is equal.
Harare's pitch is balanced. Here the team batting in the second innings gets a slight advantage. Therefore the toss can be very important. The captain might choose to bowl first because chasing seems easier.
The pressure of semi-finals is of a different level. Names and records don't matter – all that matters is the game of that day. India has rhythm, Afghanistan has passion. Together, both of them can create such a match that one will have to sit with bated breath till the last over. It will be interesting to see who will go to the finals.
