New Delhi: In the second semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2026 played on Thursday at Wankhede, India defeated England by just 7 runs and entered the final. A total of 499 runs were scored in the match and 34 sixes were hit – making it the highest-scoring match in T20 World Cup history. India made 253 for 7, while England were restricted to 246 for 7. India will now face New Zealand in the final, who defeated South Africa by 9 wickets in the first semifinal.
India scored a total of 499 runs – the highest score in any match in the T20 World Cup. The previous record was 459 runs by England vs South Africa in 2016. This is the second-highest score in T20 International (517 runs by SA vs WI on top, 2023).
A total of 73 boundaries (39 fours, 34 sixes) were hit. Most sixes were in a match in T20 World Cup. India hit 19 sixes, England 15. The earlier record was 61 boundaries.
Sanju Samson played a brilliant inning of 89 runs in 42 balls – 8 fours and 7 sixes. After being dropped in the beginning, he hit 4 sixes alone off Joffra Archer. This is the highest innings by an Indian wicketkeeper in a knockout match and equal to Virat Kohli's 89* in 2016. Sanju now has 16 sixes in the tournament – becoming the Indian batsman to hit the most sixes in a World Cup (ahead of Rohit's 15). Sanju also got the player of the match.
Jacob Bethel played an amazing inning – 105 runs in 48 balls (7 sixes). This is the highest score in the knockout of the T20 World Cup. Bethel surpasses Finn Allen's 100*. This was the fourth century in the tournament for England.
The match was heart-stopping till the last ball. Now all eyes are on the final in Ahmedabad on March 8. The hope of bringing home the trophy remains!
