New Delhi: Under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer, Team India had to face defeat by just 1 run in the second T20 match against Ireland. With this defeat, India also lost the series. After a long time, this was a very disappointing result for Team India in T20 cricket. In the match played in Belfast, Ireland batted first and scored 154 runs.
In reply, the Indian team could score only 153 runs for 9 wickets in 20 overs and remained just 1 run away from victory. This defeat not only snatched the series, but also many such records were registered in the name of Team India which players and fans would not like to remember.
Team India has faced defeat in a T20 bilateral series after about 1050 days. Earlier in August 2023, India had lost the series by losing two consecutive matches against West Indies. That was also India's last T20 series defeat.
This is only the third time in T20 International that the Indian team has lost by 1 run. Earlier, New Zealand had defeated India by the same margin in 2012 and West Indies in 2016.
Shreyas Iyer has become the second Indian captain after Rishabh Pant in T20 International who could not win his first two matches. His start as captain was not as expected.
Tilak Verma scored a brilliant half century in 46 balls. This is the sixth slowest T20 International fifty by an Indian batsman. Topping the list is KL Rahul, who completed his fifty in 56 balls against South Africa in 2022.
Ireland is not even among the top-10 teams in the ICC T20 rankings. Nevertheless, it created a big upset by defeating the world number-1 T20 team India in the series. The top-2 batsmen in the T20 rankings are from India, while no batsman from Ireland is in the top-50.
Opener Abhishek Sharma was out without opening an account in T20 cricket for the ninth time this year. With this, he has reached joint first position in the list of players who have been out on zero the most number of times in a calendar year.
The last time in 2019, Australia made a clean sweep of India in a T20 series of at least two matches. Now after seven years, Ireland also defeated India. This is the fourth time in T20 International that the Indian team could not win even a single match of the series.
After 2020, India has lost only three T20 bilateral series so far. Under the captaincy of Shikhar Dhawan in 2021, Hardik Pandya in 2023 and now Shreyas Iyer in 2026, the team lost the series.
With this defeat, India's wonderful record of winning 16 consecutive T20 series was also broken. This was the longest T20 series-winning streak of any full member team. Pakistan is at second place in this list with 11 series wins.
