Tehran: Despite the agreement between Iran and America on June 17, tension seems to be increasing again in the relations between the two countries. The root of the dispute is the different interpretations regarding the Strait of Hormuz and Article 5 of the agreement. Both sides are accusing each other of breaking the terms of the agreement. The impact of this conflict is also clearly visible on the world's most important sea route, the Strait of Hormuz.
Under Article 5 of the agreement, Iran had agreed to provide safe and free passage to merchant ships passing between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman for 60 days. It was also promised to remove the mines laid in the sea and other military obstructions within 30 days. But now the problem is who will have the right to monitor and operate the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran says that the security and surveillance of the Strait of Hormuz is its responsibility. He will not tolerate any outside interference in this. At the same time, America wants this to be an international route and all ships should pass through here without any hindrance. America demands that Oman and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) should also play a role in this. Tension is increasing between the two countries on this issue.
The situation worsened after the attack on a ship passing through the Strait of Hormuz on Friday. America held Iran responsible for this attack. While Iran denied any role in the attack. After this, both the countries accused each other of breaking the agreement.
Iran's Revolutionary Guard IRGC has advised all ships to pass only through its designated Northern Sea Route. Because of this many oil tankers had to change their route. Meanwhile, two ships named 'Ever Lovely' and 'Kiku' also came under attack.
The impact of increasing tension is directly visible on global shipping. Within a few days, the number of ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz has reduced significantly. Due to this, concerns regarding the supply and price of oil in the international market have increased. However, defence experts believe that both the countries currently want to avoid a major war and there is still scope for talks.
