New Delhi: The 35th match of IPL 2026, between the Delhi Capitals and the Punjab Kings, is currently being played at Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium. Batting first, the hosts—Delhi—posted a total of 264 runs on the scoreboard, powered by an unbeaten innings of 152 runs from KL Rahul. Setting out to chase this target, the Punjab Kings were given an explosive start by Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh. In the third over, when Priyansh Arya attempted to hit a big shot off Axar Patel, he ended up skying the ball; in the ensuing attempt to take the catch, DC bowler Lungi Ngidi sustained a severe injury. His injury appears to be quite serious.

How did Lungi Ngidi get injured?

Priyansh Arya intended to hit the third ball of the over straight down the ground, but he failed to connect cleanly with the bat. The ball went high into the air. Ngidi, stationed at mid-off, ran backward in an attempt to take the catch, but he misjudged the trajectory. The ball landed slightly behind him, and he missed it. In the process, Ngidi lost his balance and fell backward, landing on his head. Ngidi immediately collapsed to the ground.

Initially, the team physio rushed onto the field, but the situation soon escalated in severity. A stretcher and subsequently an ambulance were seen on the field. Currently, Delhi has brought Dushmantha Chameera onto the field as a replacement; however, it has not yet been officially announced whether he is playing as a concussion substitute.

How did Delhi Capitals batters perform?

The Delhi Capitals got off to a good start; however, in the third over, Arshdeep Singh dismissed Pathum Nissanka, securing the first breakthrough for Punjab. This season has been a disappointing one for Pathum Nissanka. Following his dismissal, Nitish Rana joined KL Rahul at the crease, and the duo went on to forge a double-century partnership for the second wicket. KL Rahul smashed a century off just 45 balls; however, Nitish Rana was left heartbroken as he was dismissed for 91 runs, falling just short of completing his own century.

Notably, the Delhi Capitals won the toss and elected to bat first. Neither team has made any changes to their Playing XI. Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer revealed that he, too, would have preferred to bowl first.
