Mumbai: Former champions Mumbai Indians have returned to winning ways in IPL 2026. MI kept their playoff hopes alive on Monday by defeating Lucknow Super Giants by six wickets. This marks LSG's sixth consecutive defeat. In a 'do-or-die' match, MI successfully chased down a target of 229 runs in 18.4 overs. This stands as the highest target ever successfully chased by Mumbai in the IPL. The five-time champions, MI, currently sit at the ninth spot on the points table after registering their third victory in 10 matches. Lucknow has suffered its seventh defeat in 9 matches. The road ahead has now become fraught with difficulties for LSG. The team, led by Rishabh Pant, occupies the tenth position on the table with four points.

How Did Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton Work Wonders?

Mumbai got off to a spectacular start while chasing the massive target. Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma forged a formidable 143-run partnership for the first wicket. Rickelton missed out on a century by just 17 runs; he played a blistering innings of 83 runs off 32 balls, studded with 6 fours and 8 sixes. He was dismissed by Mohsin Khan in the 11th over. Rohit, too, fell short of a century; he scored 84 runs off 44 balls, featuring six fours and seven sixes. Manimaran Siddharth claimed Rohit's wicket in the 14th over. In the 16th over, Siddharth sent Tilak Varma (11 runs off 13 balls) back to the pavilion. Mumbai suffered their fourth blow with the dismissal of stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav (12 runs off 7 balls), whom Mohammed Shami trapped in the 18th over. Naman Dhir (23 runs off 12 balls) and Will Jacks (10 runs off 4 balls) remained unbeaten, with Jacks hitting the winning six.

What About Nicholas Pooran's Explosive Fifty?

Lucknow posted a total of 228 runs for the loss of five wickets in their allotted 20 overs. In a 'do-or-die' match, MI won the toss and elected to bowl first. Lucknow did not get off to a particularly strong start. Opening the innings, Josh Inglis managed to score just 15 runs off 5 balls. Allah Ghazanfar dismissed him in the third over. Inglis and Mitchell Marsh shared a 29-run partnership for the first wicket. Subsequently, Marsh took charge of the innings admirably alongside Nicholas Pooran. The duo forged a 94-run partnership off just 34 balls. Pooran played a blistering knock of 63 runs off 21 balls, featuring one four and eight sixes. Corbin Bosch claimed Pooran's wicket on the very first ball of the ninth over. He then dismissed Marsh on the fifth ball of the same over. Marsh scored 44 runs off 25 balls, including four fours and three sixes.

Did LSG Captain Rishabh Pant Fail to Fire?

Captain Rishabh Pant (15 runs off 10 balls) failed to make an impact with the bat. Will Jacks sent him back to the pavilion in the 11th over. Debutant Akshat Raghuvanshi (11 runs off 7 balls) was dismissed via a 'caught and bowled' by Raghu Sharma in the 13th over. Lucknow had lost half their side with the score at 160. At this juncture, Aiden Markram and Himmat Singh held their ground at the crease. The pair put together a 68-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Markram contributed an unbeaten 31 runs off 25 balls, hitting one four and one six. Himmat played an innings of 40 runs off 31 balls, comprising two fours and an equal number of sixes. At one point, it appeared that LSG might breach the 250-run mark, but MI conceded only 22 runs in the final three overs.
