Mumbai: The second match of the 2026 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026) is being played today—Sunday—between the Mumbai Indians and the Kolkata Knight Riders. This clash is taking place at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium. In this contest, having won the toss, Mumbai elected to bowl first. Powered by half-centuries from Rahane and Raghuvanshi, KKR set a target of 221 runs for Mumbai.

How is Mumbai's Batting Progressing?

Chasing a target of 221 runs, Mumbai got off to a spectacular start. Rohit and Ryan Rickelton opened the innings. Both batsmen unleashed an aggressive assault, and by the 5th over, they had already propelled the team's score past the 50-run mark. Subsequently, Rohit Sharma dealt in sixes and fours, reaching his half-century in just 23 balls. After 6 overs, Mumbai's score stood at 80 for no loss.

How did KKR's Batting Unfold?

Batting first, KKR's innings was opened by captain Ajinkya Rahane and Finn Allen. Both batsmen batted in an aggressive manner, taking the score past 50 runs within the 5th over itself. However, this dangerous partnership was broken by Shardul Thakur. In the sixth over, Shardul claimed Allen's wicket. Allen scored 37 runs off 17 balls. Following this, Cameron Green scored 18 runs off 10 balls, but Shardul dismissed him in the 9th over. Nevertheless, Ajinkya Rahane held his ground at one end; he completed his half-century in just 27 balls. However, Shardul eventually claimed his wicket in the 14th over. Rahane contributed 67 runs with his bat.

What didi Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Rinku Singh do?

Subsequently, Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Rinku Singh took charge. Both batted in an aggressive fashion, with Raghuvanshi reaching his half-century in just 28 balls. Meanwhile, KKR's score crossed the 200-run mark in the 19th over itself. However, in that very same over, Hardik claimed the wicket of Raghuvanshi. Raghuvanshi contributed 51 runs off just 29 balls. Following this, Rinku Singh played an unbeaten knock of 33 runs off 21 balls, on the strength of which KKR set a target of 221 runs for Mumbai.

Excitement surrounding this match is at its peak, largely because the five-time champions, Mumbai Indians, have failed to win their opening match in each of the last 13 seasons. Mumbai last won their season opener in 2012, when they defeated Chennai Super Kings by eight wickets at Chepauk.

However, Mumbai Indians boast an extremely strong record at the Wankhede Stadium. The team has registered 57 wins in 92 matches played here, maintaining a win percentage of 62%. Despite this impressive record, Mumbai has still lost its first four matches of the season—even while playing on their home ground.

Who holds the upper hand: Mumbai or KKR?

Sunday's match is being viewed as Mumbai's biggest opportunity to turn this record around. On paper, KKR's bowling attack appeared formidable; however, the team has suffered several major setbacks. Matheesha Pathirana has not yet joined the squad, Harshit Rana has been ruled out for the entire season, and Mustafizur is also unavailable.

What is the Head-to-Head Record?

The head-to-head record also favors Mumbai. In the 35 matches played between the two teams, Mumbai Indians have won 24. Consequently, on paper, Mumbai appears to be the favorite in this contest; however, the real question remains the same—will Mumbai Indians finally be able to break the curse of their opening match?
