Will opening match jinx haunt Mumbai Indians during IPL 2026 as well? (Image X @sachin_rt)
Mumbai: The second match of this year's edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026) is scheduled to be played today—Sunday—between the Mumbai Indians and the Kolkata Knight Riders. This clash will take place at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium. However, ahead of this showdown, one question looms in everyone's mind: will the Mumbai Indians—ranked among the most successful teams in the IPL—be able to win their opening match this time around?
Indeed, the five-time champions, Mumbai Indians, are one of the most successful franchises in IPL history; yet, surprisingly, the team has failed to win its opening match for the past 13 seasons. Now, as they face KKR at Wankhede on Sunday, that same question arises once again: will Mumbai finally be able to break their opening-match jinx?
KKR Assistant Coach Shane Watson also weighed in on this record with a touch of humor, stating, "Hopefully, the Mumbai Indians' record of losing their first match continues. However, we are playing at Wankhede, which is their fortress. It is never easy to defeat them here."
The Mumbai Indians have lost 14 of their 18 season openers. The team suffered a defeat in its very first IPL match back in 2008, when RCB beat them by five wickets. Mumbai last won an opening match in 2012, when they defeated the Chennai Super Kings by eight wickets at Chepauk.
However, the Mumbai Indians have maintained an exceptionally strong record at Wankhede. The team has registered 57 wins in 92 matches played at this venue, boasting a win percentage of 62%. Despite this home-ground advantage, Mumbai has still lost four of its opening matches while playing at Wankhede.
Sunday's encounter is being viewed as Mumbai's biggest opportunity to turn this record around. On paper, KKR's bowling attack appeared formidable; however, the team has recently suffered several significant setbacks. Matheesha Pathirana has not yet joined the team; Harshit Rana has been ruled out for the entire season, and Mustafizur is also unavailable.
Furthermore, the team's lead spinner, Varun Chakravarthy, has not appeared to be in good form recently. In contrast, Mumbai possesses a formidable weapon in Jasprit Bumrah, who appears to be in magnificent rhythm.
The head-to-head record also favors Mumbai. In the 35 matches played between the two teams, Mumbai Indians have won 24. Consequently, on paper, Mumbai appears to be the favorite for this contest; however, the real question remains—will Mumbai Indians finally be able to break the curse of their opening match?
Mumbai Indians' Probable Playing XI: Rohit Sharma, Quinton de Kock (Wicketkeeper), Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya (Captain), Naman Dhir, Sherfane Rutherford, Deepak Chahar, Allah Ghazanfar, Trent Boult, and Jasprit Bumrah.
Kolkata Knight Riders' Probable Playing XI: Finn Allen, Tim Seifert (Wicketkeeper), Ajinkya Rahane (Captain), Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Cameron Green, Rinku Singh, Ramandeep Singh, Vaibhav Arora, Blessing Muzarabani, Varun Chakravarthy, and Umran Malik.
