New Delhi: The BCCI and the national selectors are currently preparing for a major overhaul regarding the future of Team India. Suryakumar Yadav—the captain who led India to the T20 World Cup title just three months ago in March—is set to be relieved of his duties; in his place, middle-order star batsman Shreyas Iyer is likely to be handed the command of the Indian T20 team. Hidden behind this significant decision lies a visionary master plan devised by the BCCI.
The Indian T20 squad for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England is scheduled to be announced this Saturday; this will mark India's first T20 assignment following their World Cup victory. The primary reasons behind the decision to remove 'Surya' from the captaincy—and entrust this responsibility to Shreyas Iyer—immediately prior to this tour have now come to light.
The most significant factor driving the selectors' decision is the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, as well as the T20 World Cup scheduled for the same year, which will be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand. The BCCI now aims to build a new team with this 2028 cycle firmly in mind. Current captain Suryakumar Yadav is now 35 years old, and it is considered unlikely that he will be able to maintain his current level of fitness and form all the way through to 2028. For this very reason, he may be dropped entirely from the upcoming T20 squad.
The decision to remove Surya from both the captaincy and the team stems not solely from his age, but also from his recent lackluster performance. Although India emerged as champions in the 2026 T20 World Cup, Surya's bat remained largely silent; across 9 innings, he managed to score a mere 242 runs at a strike rate of 136.72. His slump continued into the 2026 IPL, where his "flop show" persisted as he could only muster 270 runs across 13 innings at a modest average of 20.76.
At 31 years of age, Shreyas Iyer has emerged as the strongest contender to succeed Suryakumar Yadav. Since December 2023, Iyer has not played a single T20 International for India—largely due to team composition and the presence of players like Surya and Tilak Varma—yet his record as both a captain and a batsman in the IPL remains unparalleled. Iyer possesses extensive and exceptional experience in IPL captaincy. He led the Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL title victory in 2024.
Furthermore, he has guided both the Delhi Capitals (in 2020) and the Punjab Kings (in 2025) to the finals under his leadership. Iyer has conclusively demonstrated his excellent form by smashing 604 runs at a strike rate of 175.07 in IPL 2025, followed by an explosive 498 runs at a strike rate of 168.81 in IPL 2026.
Another pivotal element of the BCCI's master plan is 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who created a sensation with his blistering batting during IPL 2026. Vaibhav is set to be included in the Indian senior squad for the very first time for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England. With this selection, he will become the youngest player to be chosen for the Indian men's team since Sachin Tendulkar's debut in the late 1980s. In IPL 2026, Vaibhav amassed 776 runs at an astonishing strike rate of 237.30. Prior to joining Team India for their tours, he is scheduled to feature in the India-A Tri-Series, which will take place in Sri Lanka from June 9 to June 21.
