New Delhi: Under Shreyas Iyer 's captaincy, the Indian T20 team has set another shameful record. India failed to defend even 249 runs in the second T20I against the West Indies in Ranchi. Chasing this target in 18.3 overs, the visiting team achieved two significant feats. First, the West Indies became the team to chase the highest target against India.

Previously, this record was held by Australia. Second, the West Indies have achieved the record for the highest total against India in India. Batting first in the second T20I, Team India set a target of 250 runs for the West Indies, thanks to Sanju Samson's fifty and explosive innings from Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma. The visiting team chased down this target with six wickets in hand. Captain Shai Hope scored a century and remained unbeaten on 102.

Shreyas Iyer took over the captaincy this year

Suryakumar Yadav, the captain who led India to victory in the 2026 T20 World Cup, was dropped from the team due to his poor form. Consequently, Shreyas Iyer was given the reins of the Indian T20 team. His first assignment was against Ireland, which was considered an easy tour to begin his captaincy career. On June 26, 2026, Shreyas Iyer, who captained Team India for the first time, faced defeat in his very first match.

Shreyas Iyer not only lost the first T20, but under his captaincy, India clean swept the two-match T20 series against Ireland. The Indian team then traveled to England, where they suffered a crushing 0-4 defeat. India won series against Zimbabwe and Afghanistan without losing a single match, but the West Indies now appear poised to give India a tough fight.
