Ahmedabad: The final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 will be played between India and New Zealand on Sunday, March 8. If the Indian team wants to win the T20 World Cup for the second consecutive time, it will need a strong performance from its top order. This is considered the key to India's victory in the final, which will be held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad from 7 p.m.

How has India's top order performed?

The top order has played a crucial role in India's victories throughout the tournament. Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, and Abhishek Sharma have provided the team with excellent starts on numerous occasions. If any one of these three performs well in the final match, India's title win will become easier.

In the match against Pakistan, Ishan Kishan put the team in a strong position by scoring 77 runs in 40 balls on a difficult pitch, leading India to a 61-run victory. Then, in the Super 8 match against Zimbabwe, Abhishek Sharma played a quickfire innings of 55 runs in 30 balls, laying the foundation for India's big win. Sanju Samson's 97 in the virtual quarter-final against the West Indies led India to victory. Sanju's bat also performed well in the semi-final against England, scoring a blistering 89, helping India win by 7 runs.

How did Indian batters perform against South Africa?

India's only defeat in the tournament came against South Africa, where the top order completely flopped. In that match, Ishan Kishan, Abhishek Sharma, and Tilak Verma were dismissed for 0, 15, and 1, respectively, and India could only manage 111 runs while chasing a target of 188. This clearly shows that India's success depends largely on its opening batting. If the top order provides a strong start, the middle and lower order can play their intended roles.

If Tilak Varma comes in to bat at number seven, his job is to score runs quickly in the final overs. However, if early wickets fall quickly and he has to come in early, he has to play the anchor role, which is not easy. In such a situation, if one of Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, or Abhishek Sharma plays a big innings, or if all three provide a quick start of 25-30 runs, India's chances of victory will increase significantly.

In a big match like the final, a good start not only strengthens the scoreboard but also boosts the confidence of the other batsmen in the dressing room. This is why the Indian team will be relying on a good performance from its top order in the title match.
