Virender Sehwag, one of India’s most famous cricketers, recently shared a tense experience he had with former India coach Greg Chappell. Sehwag, known for his aggressive batting and consistency at the top of the order, was a key player for India during his prime. In a recent interview, he revealed how Chappell pressured him during a difficult period in his career, creating a challenging moment for the star batter.
Threats During a Rough Patch
Sehwag revealed that while he was struggling with low scores, Chappell warned him to perform in the next game or risk being dropped. “Greg Chappell’s words once really hit me. I was having a tough time. Sehwag recounted, “He said, ‘If you don’t move your feet, you won’t score runs.’ I responded, ‘Greg, I’ve already scored over 6,000 runs with an average exceeding 50.’ But he dismissed it, saying, ‘Doesn’t matter,’ and that led to a heated argument,” Sehwag shared on The Life Savers Show.
Rahul Dravid Steps In
The situation escalated further when Chappell told Sehwag, “Score runs, or I’ll drop you.” Rahul Dravid intervened to calm things down. Despite the pressure, Sehwag went out to bat and scored 184 runs by the end of the second session. “After that innings, I told Rahul Dravid, ‘Ask your coach not to come near me,’” Sehwag added, recalling the moment.
Sehwag’s Legendary Career
Sehwag stands as one of India’s most accomplished batters, having played 104 Test matches, amassing 8,586 runs at an average of 49.34, with 23 centuries to his name. Known for his fearless batting and match-winning innings, Sehwag left a lasting impact on Indian cricket in both Tests and ODIs.
