Kamjong:  A moderate intensity earthquake struck the north-eastern Indian state of Manipur on Tuesday, sending sleeping people running out of their homes in fear. This earthquake of 5.2 magnitude on the Richter scale occurred at 5:59 am on Tuesday, with its epicenter in Kamjong district. The tremors were felt till Manipur, Nagaland, Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh.

Fortunately, there is no news of any loss of life or property. This is not the first time in the month of April that an earthquake has struck the northeastern states.

Where did the earthquake happen?

According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the epicenter of the earthquake was approximately 62 kilometers below the Earth's surface, making it a medium-depth earthquake. Although the impact of such earthquakes is felt over a large area, surface damage is usually minimal due to their greater depth.

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck Manipur on Tuesday morning. The tremor occurred early morning at 5:50 am IST, with its epicentre located in Kamjong district, according to National Center for Seismology (NCS).

Despite the strong tremors, no injuries or major damage have been reported. Officials are monitoring the situation.

Is it the first time in April?

Manipur is located in the seismically active northeastern region of India. This region falls in seismic zone V, considered the most vulnerable region in the country. Consequently, earthquakes are frequently felt here and the region is considered highly sensitive. This is not the first time in the month of April that an earthquake has struck the northeastern states.

Manipur was also rocked by two earthquakes on April 7. The magnitudes were 4.3 and 3.0 on the Richter scale, and the tremors were felt as far as Arunachal Pradesh.

What about other countries?

A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck northeastern and northern Japan on Monday, prompting a tsunami warning, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. A tsunami up to 80 centimeters high was recorded at Kuji port in Iwate Prefecture.
