New Delhi: The Delhi government has intensified its crackdown on food adulteration ahead of the festive season, with the Food Safety Department destroying approximately 7,000 kg of unhygienic and foul-smelling khoya during an inspection at the Khoya Mandi in Mori Gate on Tuesday.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta personally visited the market to review the operation and assess the action taken by officials. She directed the department to ensure that suspicious food products do not reach consumers and warned that those found compromising public health would face strict legal action, regardless of their influence or position.
During the inspection, the Food Safety Department collected 44 samples from the market and conducted preliminary tests using a mobile food testing laboratory. As many as 35 samples failed to meet the prescribed standards, while two additional samples were sent to a laboratory for detailed examination.
The preliminary findings also indicated the possible presence of milk powder, vanaspati and other substances associated with adulteration. The department's action focused on preventing potentially unsafe khoya from entering the food supply chain.
According to the department, 2,830 kg of khoya was destroyed on September 4, followed by 610 kg on September 8 and another 520 kg on October 23. With the latest operation at Mori Gate, the total quantity of khoya destroyed so far has reached 10,660 kg.
Chief Minister Gupta appreciated the Food Safety Department's efforts and said ensuring access to pure and safe food during festivals remained a government priority. She added that the campaign against food adulteration would continue with strict enforcement.
