House Insider Turns Thief: Man Steals Jewellery Using Cupboard Key, Arrested by Delhi Police (TIN)
New Delhi: In the northern district of the capital, Delhi, an acquaintance with inside knowledge of a household betrayed that trust by committing a theft. The individual had his eyes on gold and silver jewelry kept in a cupboard in Kabir Basti, Malka Ganj. Seizing an opportunity, he used a key hanging on the wall to open the cupboard and fled with jewelry worth lakhs. The Sabzi Mandi police station successfully solved the case and arrested the accused. Acting on his information, the police recovered a total of 68.13 grams of stolen jewelry in two separate instances.
Niharika Bhatt, DCP (North District), stated that on October 30, a resident of Kabir Basti filed a complaint regarding the theft of jewelry from his home. The incident occurred between 2:00 PM and 10:00 PM on October 26. Upon discovering the jewelry missing from the cupboard, an e-FIR (No. 80093530/2026) was registered, and an investigation was initiated under Sections 305 and 317(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Given the seriousness of the case, a special team—comprising Head Constable Satyapal and Constables Shankar and Naveen—was formed under the supervision of the Station House Officer (SHO). During the investigation, the police detained a local resident, Kuldeep alias Rijul (31), for questioning. He was a frequent visitor to the victim's home and was familiar with the household's layout and maintenance. Based on his information, on October 31, the police recovered four men's rings, two women's rings, a *mangalsutra* with a pearl chain, and a pair of earrings from the roof of his house. He was subsequently arrested.
Following a one-day police remand granted by the court on November 1, the accused was interrogated once again. Acting on his information, a broken ring (belonging to a woman) and a melted-down necklace were recovered from a jewellery shop near the Clock Tower (Ghantaghar). The accused allegedly confessed to selling the ring for ₹23,000 and the necklace for ₹1.10 lakh. He also admitted to committing the theft to fund his addictions to drugs and gambling, and stated that he had lost the proceeds. His claims regarding involvement in other thefts are currently being investigated. The recovered items include a total of six types of jewellery.
