New Delhi: Delhi Police have arrested social media influencer Aamir Shaukeen in connection with alleged racist remarks directed at a young man from Tripura. The Sadar Bazar police team apprehended the accused in the Karol Bagh area after a video related to the incident went viral on social media.
The case attracted widespread attention online, with Union Minister Kiren Rijiju also taking cognisance of the matter following the circulation of the video.
The controversy began after a video allegedly showing Shaukeen making racist remarks against a youth from Tripura spread across social media platforms. The incident triggered public reactions and subsequently came to the attention of the police.
Following a complaint, police registered a case under relevant legal provisions and launched an investigation. Several teams from the North District were reportedly deployed to trace the accused.
According to the information provided, the investigation was being monitored by North District Deputy Commissioner of Police Niharika Bhatt. Police teams pursued available leads and searched potential locations before the Sadar Bazar team arrested Shaukeen in Karol Bagh.
Police have registered the case under Sections 192, 196, 352 and 353 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Investigators are examining the viral video, the alleged remarks and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Further legal action will depend on the evidence gathered during the investigation. The arrest marks a significant development in the case, which came into the spotlight after the video circulated widely and Union Minister Kiren Rijiju took notice.
The incident has renewed attention on the responsibilities that accompany social media activity. Alleged remarks targeting someone on the basis of their identity or place of origin can raise serious concerns about discrimination, public order and social harmony.
While freedom of expression remains important, online statements may also carry legal consequences when they allegedly violate the law. Police are continuing their investigation to establish the facts and determine the next steps in the case.
