Delhi Cash Robbery-Murder Case Cracked, Cousin Among Three Arrested (Pankaj Rai)
New Delhi: The North District Police have made a sensational breakthrough in the case involving the robbery of cash and the fatal stabbing of a man who resisted the attempt. The incident occurred near the Neel Chhatri Mandir underpass in the Kashmere Gate area, where the victim's e-rickshaw was intercepted. According to the police, the victim's own cousin was involved in the crime. Three accused have been arrested, and a 16-year-old juvenile has also been apprehended. Police teams are actively conducting raids to locate three other accused individuals who fled after the incident.
During a press conference at Delhi Police Headquarters, Joint CP (Central Range) Madhur Verma stated that the North District Police team, under the supervision of Niharika Bhatt, utilized footage from over 500 CCTV cameras, ANPR cameras, and technical surveillance to track down the accused. The investigation revealed the use of a Maruti Swift car with a fake number plate, which provided a crucial clue for piecing together the events of the crime. The police claim to have recovered ₹2,29,800 in cash from the accused.
According to the police, on the evening of September 24 at approximately 7:20 PM, the complainant, Sachin—a resident of Morena, Madhya Pradesh—was returning in an e-rickshaw with his uncle, Prabhat. They were carrying cash collected as payments from shops in the Gandhi Nagar market. When the e-rickshaw reached the Neel Chhatri Mandir underpass behind Salimgarh Fort, four miscreants intercepted the vehicle. It is alleged that the miscreants attempted to snatch a polythene bag filled with cash that Prabhat was carrying. When Prabhat resisted, the miscreants attacked him with knives. During the incident, Sachin and another passenger were also attacked. Prabhat, who was critically injured, was rushed to the hospital, but doctors declared him dead. An FIR (No. 436/2026) was registered at the Kashmere Gate police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and an investigation was initiated.
Given the gravity of the case, the North District Police formed joint teams to investigate. CCTV footage from the crime scene and surrounding routes was scrutinized. During this process, the police spotted a Maruti Swift car making a sudden, high-speed U-turn near the underpass and heading towards Salimgarh Fort. Initially, identifying the car was difficult due to the darkness and the distance from the cameras. Subsequently, the police advanced the investigation by cross-referencing the CCTV footage with data from ANPR cameras and technical surveillance. The identified registration number was found to be registered to one Bhagat Singh, a resident of Noida; however, the car seen in the CCTV footage turned out to be different. This gave the police a clear indication that a fake number plate had been used in the crime.
Following this, footage from approximately 150 cameras installed at the underpass and nearby routes was examined in detail. The footage showed a car with a Uttar Pradesh registration number approaching the underpass from the direction of the Yamuna via the 'Lohe Ka Pul' (Iron Bridge) about two hours before the incident. There were five to six occupants in the car. By piecing together footage from various locations, the police identified the vehicle and the suspects on board. The investigation revealed that the Maruti Swift used in the crime was registered in the name of Dipu, a resident of Jhansi.
The police began examining Dipu's mobile numbers and Call Detail Records (CDR). During the investigation, a mobile number was identified as suspicious; it was in contact with both the deceased, Prabhat, and another individual named Dipu. Technical analysis revealed that the number was being used by Om Singh, a resident of Kanpur. The investigation took a new turn, and a police team traveled to Kanpur, where they apprehended Om Singh—a cousin of the deceased, Prabhat. According to the police, Om allegedly confessed during interrogation that he had shared information regarding Prabhat's movements and his handling of cash with Raj and Dipu.
Based on Om's interrogation and further technical analysis, police teams conducted raids in Kanpur, Jhansi, and Etawah. Dipu and a 16-year-old juvenile were apprehended in Jhansi, while another accused, Abhishek, was arrested in Etawah, where he had allegedly been hiding. Police state that three other accused remain at large, and continuous efforts are being made to apprehend them.
Information gathered during interrogation suggests that Om provided the accused with details regarding the deceased Prabhat's cash-related activities. Subsequently, Dipu allegedly brought Rohit Yadav and a juvenile from his village, while Raj and Om reportedly contacted Aniruddh Chauhan and Abhishek. According to the police, the accused finalized the conspiracy in Noida. They then traveled towards the underpass—Dipu in a Maruti Swift and Abhishek allegedly on a motorcycle. The investigation also revealed that the deceased, Prabhat, was already acquainted with Aniruddh Chauhan; police state that they had met in Om's village, which Prabhat used to visit to see Om's family.
According to the police, after executing the crime, the accused reached Noida, where the allegedly looted money was shared among them. Subsequently, all the accused dispersed to different locations to evade police capture. During the investigation, the police recovered a total of ₹2,29,800 from the accused. Specifically, ₹1.10 lakh was recovered from Abhishek, ₹19,800 from Dipu Rathore, and ₹1 lakh from a juvenile.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Om Singh (21, resident of Chandniwada, Ratanpur, Police Station Rasulabad, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh) and Dipu Rathore (28, resident of Kairokahar, Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh). According to the police, they have prior involvement in cases in Uttar Pradesh related to rape, POCSO, attempted murder, extortion, rioting, and charges under the Goonda and Gangster Acts. Another accused is Abhishek (24, resident of Samayun, Rasulabad, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh); additionally, a 16-year-old juvenile was apprehended. Police state that the juvenile has previously been implicated in cases involving rape, POCSO, and the SC/ST Act.
DCP Niharika Bhatt stated that three accused involved in this conspiracy are still at large. Separate teams are continuously conducting raids at suspected hideouts in search of them. The police are now working to determine the specific role each accused played in the crime, the location of the remaining looted money, and where other items and evidence used in the crime have been concealed.
The entire operation was conducted under the overall supervision of DCP (North District) Niharika Bhatt, Additional DCP-I Pukhraj Kamal Gupta, and Additional DCP-II Ram Dalesh Meena. The first team was led by ACP (Kotwali) Shankar Banerjee. The team was led by Inspector Prashant Yadav, SHO of Kashmiri Gate. The team included Inspector Satendra, Inspector Pradeep, Sub-Inspector Mukesh, and Sub-Inspector Nishant.
The second team was guided by ACP (Operations, North/Special Staff) Dhattarwal. The team was led by Inspector Rohit Saraswat, In-charge of the Special Staff. The team included Head Constables Akash, Devendra, Sandeep, Rambabu, Sandeep, Amit, and Rahees; and Constables Ravi, Kuldeep, Sachin, Vicky, Kasim, Mohit Sheoran, Mohit, Puran, and Nitin.
