Gandhi Jayanti Message: Make Clean Delhi the Pride of the Nation (Pankaj Rai)
New Delhi: On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta participated in a cleanliness drive in Azadpur on Friday under the ‘Seva Mera Yogdan’ campaign. The Chief Minister personally took part in the cleanliness campaign to spread the message of cleanliness and later conducted a detailed inspection of the entire area.
During the inspection, the Chief Minister reviewed the central verge, footpaths, roadside walls, drains, drainage systems and public spaces. After noticing garbage at several places, encroachments by fruit vendors on footpaths, unauthorised advertisements on walls and damaged public infrastructure, she sought information from officials and directed them to take immediate action.
The Chief Minister directed officials to ensure regular cleaning of the central verge and called for artwork and beautification of underpasses and long walls. She also interacted with fruit vendors occupying the footpaths and said that a well-organised solution should be found that takes their livelihood into consideration while ensuring that pedestrians do not face inconvenience and cleanliness is maintained.
At Azadpur Mandi, the Chief Minister appealed to fruit vendors and workers to dispose of waste at designated places after completing their work. She said that dumping garbage into drains affects the drainage system.
The Chief Minister also said that a statue of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is planned to be installed at the junction being developed in December, and the site will be named ‘Atal Chowk’. She also directed officials to improve greenery, cleanliness and public facilities around the junction.
The Chief Minister said that cleanliness should not be a one-day campaign but should become a way of life. MLA Raj Kumar Bhatia, municipal officials, public representatives and local residents were also present on the occasion.
