Posing as Officials, Robbers Stop Motorbike and Flee with Gold Worth Rs 45 Lakh (Pankaj Rai)

New Delhi: In the national capital, criminals employed a modus operandi straight out of a movie, ensnaring a jeweler in their trap. By feigning the authority of a traffic police officer, they forced a motorcyclist to stop. While engaging him in conversation, they unzipped a bag hanging on the back of the bike and fled with gold jewelry valued at approximately ₹45 lakh. However, the swift action of the Central District Police thwarted their plans. The police apprehended all three suspects and recovered the entire haul—400 grams of gold jewelry.

During a press conference at the Central District Police headquarters, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Prashant Chaudhary stated that on November 1, an individual from 'Mahalaxmi Jewellers (Swastik)' in Beadonpura was travelling on his motorcycle toward his office at Britannia Chowk, carrying about 400 grams of gold jewellery. The bag containing the gold was hung on the rear of the bike. As he approached the Bank Street intersection, one of the suspects, posing as a traffic controller, signalled him to stop.

At this point, the next phase of the crime unfolded. One suspect kept the motorcyclist distracted, while another surreptitiously unzipped the bag and removed the gold jewellery. A third accomplice kept a lookout. Once the crime was executed, all three fled the scene.

Footage exposed the plot; all three were apprehended from Anand Parbat

Following the complaint, an electronic FIR was registered at the Karol Bagh police station, and an investigation was launched. Police examined footage from nearby CCTV cameras and activated local intelligence networks. Following a sustained pursuit, a police team arrested Bharat (27), Kapil alias Rahul (33), and Kavya Aryan Saini alias Bhanja (22) from the Anand Parbat area on November 3.

According to the police, the accused, Kapil, is a 'proclaimed offender' (a listed habitual criminal) under the jurisdiction of the Anand Parbat police station. He has a total of 14 criminal cases registered against him, including charges of murder, robbery, violations of the Arms Act, and theft. Bharat has also been implicated in cases involving murder and theft. The police have recovered all the stolen gold jewellery—weighing approximately 400 grams—from the possession of the three accused. The estimated value of the recovered jewellery is stated to be Rs 45 lakh.
