New Delhi: Following the T20 series on their New Zealand tour, the Indian team began the ODI series with a win. In the first ODI match in Auckland, India cruised to a comfortable five-wicket victory, thanks to a lethal performance from their fast bowlers.
Played at Eden Park, Arshdeep Singh, Gurnur Brar, and Anshul Kamboj bundled out New Zealand for just 185 runs. Virat Kohli's explosive half-century helped India secure a comfortable victory amid rain.
Rain affected the first match of the series on Wednesday, November 4th. The match started exactly 10 minutes late. However, the Indian bowlers wreaked havoc thereafter. Arshdeep Singh (4/70) gave the team a solid start, taking two wickets within the powerplay. On the other hand, Anshul Kamboj (2/22) and Gurnur Brar (3/44) also applied pressure. Brar capitalized on this situation, taking two wickets, one of which he himself took a one-handed catch.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma's excellent fielding resulted in a run out, leaving the score at 97 for five. Anshul Kamboj then took two wickets in two consecutive overs, one of which came with a brilliant one-handed catch by Virat Kohli. Glenn Phillips again tried to score as many runs as possible for New Zealand, but found no support from the other side. Finally, number 11 batsman Blair Tickner smashed four sixes, three of which came in Ardhadeep's over, leaving New Zealand all out for 185.
The Indian team had a poor start, losing Rohit Sharma in the first over without even opening his account. It looked like New Zealand might stage a comeback and win the match, but Virat Kohli and captain Shubman Gill combined to make a strong comeback. While captain Gill (37) played cautiously and struggled to play shots, Virat Kohli (74) continued to bat brilliantly, scoring boundaries with ease.
The match was interrupted twice due to rain, reducing Team India's target to 143 runs in 32 overs. Kohli scored a half-century in just 35 balls, his 80th ODI half-century. Kohli and Gill shared a 113-run partnership. However, during this period, India lost four more wickets, including Gill and Kohli. However, this did not affect the match, and India won the match in the 23rd over.
