Gurgaon Shivers At 0.6°C As Cold Wave Grips North India

Gurgaon: Gurgaon recorded an unusually low 0.6 degrees Celsius on Monday morning, making it one of the chilliest places in the plains of North India. 

How low did temperatures fall?

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said this was the lowest minimum temperature for the city so far this winter. Nearby Shimla, a well-known hill station, was warmer at about 4 degrees Celsius by comparison.

What are the broader weather conditions?

A strong cold wave is sweeping across the northern states, pushing the mercury down sharply over the weekend and into this week. Dense fog and early morning frost were reported in parts of Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and Delhi. 

IMD officials say the cold conditions are likely to stay over the next few days.

Taking to X on Monday, IMD said, "Cold Wave and Fog Warning for Haryana and Punjab (12.01.2026). Cold wave to Severe Cold wave and Dense to Very Dense fog conditions very likely over Haryana and Punjab for 13th January 2026."

In Delhi, the minimum temperature on Monday was around 3 degrees Celsius at Lodhi Road. Other parts of the capital also felt the chill, though not as extreme as Gurgaon.

The IMD has issued weather warnings for this region. Gurgaon and neighbouring districts can expect very cold conditions for the next 48 hours. Parts of Punjab and Haryana are also under red alert for dense fog and severe cold, while Delhi and western Uttar Pradesh have received orange alerts. 

What's the situation in Rajasthan and nearby states?

Rajasthan saw some of the coldest readings too. For example, temperatures fell to around minus 3 degrees Celsius at Mount Abu, a rare sight for the state’s hill station. Several districts in western Rajasthan have been put on alert as the chill settles in and visibility drops due to fog.

How are people coping?

Early morning commuters bundled up against the cold. Schools are advising students to wear warm clothes. In rural areas, farmers are taking extra care of livestock as frost settles on fields. Residents say this winter feels harsher than in recent years.

What’s next?

Forecasters say the cold wave will continue for a few more days before temperatures slowly begin to rise. Dense fog in the mornings is likely to persist, which could disrupt travel and outdoor activities.
