Chandigarh: The results of Punjab's municipal corporation, municipal council and nagar panchayat elections have delivered a strong mandate in favor of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), reinforcing public confidence in the government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.

What does the result say?

According to the results declared so far for 1,441 wards, AAP has emerged as the dominant political force by winning 670 seats. The Congress secured 275 seats, while the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) managed 203. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) recorded a disappointing performance, with 1,142 of its candidates reportedly losing their deposits.

Where did AAP win?

AAP registered impressive victories across several key urban local bodies. The party won 20 of 21 seats in Dhuri, 19 of 23 in Sunam, 11 of 13 in Sri Anandpur Sahib, 10 of 11 in Ramdas, 9 of 15 in Kartarpur and 12 of 19 in Samana. The results indicate that AAP's support extends beyond Assembly constituencies and remains strong at the grassroots level.

What about other parties?

One of the most significant outcomes came from Gidderbaha, considered a political stronghold of Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring. The result is being viewed as a setback for the Congress and a sign of shifting political preferences among voters.

Political observers believe the civic poll results reflect public approval of the state government's welfare and governance initiatives, including free electricity, improvements in schools and hospitals, anti-corruption measures and employment-related efforts. The outcome also suggests that voters prioritized governance and development over political rhetoric.

The BJP faced its toughest challenge in the elections, failing to make a significant impact in most urban local bodies. The large number of candidates losing their deposits has raised questions about the party's political standing in Punjab.

What did Anurag Dhanda say?

Reacting to the results, AAP's national media in-charge Anurag Dhanda said that out of 48 urban local bodies where results have been declared, AAP won 34, while Congress was limited to three and the Akali Dal to six. He claimed the results demonstrated the electorate's support for AAP's governance model.

The civic elections are being widely viewed as an important indicator ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. The results suggest that AAP has strengthened its organizational base and maintained public trust in the state, while opposition parties continue to search for issues and leadership capable of challenging the ruling party.

Beyond choosing local representatives, voters appear to have delivered a broader political message,  rewarding governance and development-focused politics while rejecting traditional political narratives, dynastic politics and negative campaigning. Analysts see the AAP's strong performance in these civic polls as a significant signal for the future direction of Punjab politics.
