Mathura: Panic gripped the densely populated Ghiya Mandi market on Saturday morning after a massive fire engulfed a three-storey building, damaging a television repair shop and parts of the adjoining residential premises. The fire reportedly began at Abrar’s TV repair shop before spreading to other sections of the building.
Thick smoke and towering flames rising from the structure alarmed shopkeepers and residents in the area. Fire department teams were rushed to the location after receiving information about the incident.
According to eyewitnesses, smoke was first noticed coming from the building at around 9 am on Saturday. Before people could understand what was happening, the fire intensified and spread rapidly.
Electronic equipment and other materials kept inside the repair shop, along with household belongings stored in the residential portion, were caught in the blaze. People present in the market initially tried to control the flames themselves but had to move back as the fire grew stronger. Shopkeepers nearby were also concerned about the safety of their own establishments.
Three fire engines reached the spot and began firefighting operations. Firefighters continued spraying water for an extended period to prevent the flames from spreading further. After considerable effort, they managed to bring the situation under control.
Relief and rescue operations were subsequently carried out inside the building. A preliminary assessment has suggested a possible short circuit as the cause of the fire, although the exact reason will be established only after a detailed investigation.
The fire destroyed goods and belongings stored in the shop and residential premises, with losses estimated to run into lakhs of rupees.
Kotwali in-charge Ajay Kaushal said the fire was severe, but the Fire Department responded in time and brought it under control. He confirmed that no casualties had been reported. Authorities are assessing the extent of the property damage.
