Lucknow: A massive fire that broke out in a building in the Purniya area of Aliganj, Lucknow, on Monday shook the entire locality. The fire spread so rapidly that within minutes, the entire building was engulfed in smoke and flames. So far, 15 people have lost their lives in the incident. Senior police officials clarified that there was neither a coaching center nor a library operating in the building; a pet shop was located on the ground floor, while an animation center—where employees were working—operated on the upper floor.
Local eyewitness Om Prakash described the terrifying situation that unfolded after the fire started. According to him, fire tenders arrived at the scene after about half an hour. During this time, people trapped inside smashed the building's glass windows with stones in a desperate bid to save their lives. Om Prakash stated that as soon as the glass broke, several young men and women jumped from ledges and open areas to escape, managing to save themselves.
Amidst the severity of the fire, local residents played a crucial role in relief and rescue efforts. People rushed to the scene and helped extract those who were trapped. Many were seen surrounded by smoke and flames but were rescued safely thanks to local efforts. Trees surrounding the building were reduced to ashes during the incident, and the animal feed stored in the pet shop was completely destroyed by the fire.
Eyewitness accounts claim there was a delay in the arrival of the fire brigade, although the administration has not yet issued an official response regarding this. ADCP (Central) Jitendra Kumar stated that relief and rescue operations are ongoing and detailed information would be provided only after the operation concludes. He did not give a clear answer to questions regarding delays involving fire tenders.
Upon receiving the information, fire and police teams arrived at the scene and began efforts to bring the fire under control. The fire was brought under control after strenuous effort, and cooling operations are currently underway. Upon learning of the incident, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognizance of the situation and directed officials to immediately reach the site and intensify relief and rescue operations. Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak also monitored the situation.
According to the police, initial reports suggested that 4–5 people might be trapped, but everyone was subsequently rescued safely. One person sustained injuries and has been admitted to the hospital. The Lucknow police and administration have clarified that no fatalities have been confirmed so far. The situation in the area is under control, and an investigation is ongoing.
